i used to be a dj at kalx in berkeley but since i stopped doing that, i'm really out of it when it comes to new music. i'd like to get some new stuff, and i could use some suggestions. some of my favorite bands are the magnetic fields, the chills, the bats (pretty much every kiwi pop band on flying nun), small factory, elliott smith, barbara manning, uncle tupelo, the descendents, neutral milk hotel, the flatmates, the shop assistants, most bands on sarah records, slumberland or parasol... okay i could go on and on... but most of the albums i own came out in the '90s or earlier... :) help please! oh, specific album recommendations would be especially useful. i also like world fusion dance stuff like the buddha bar compilations, lost at last, transglobal underground, & talvin singh. thanks for any ideas you might have!

one disc i've been listening to a lot lately is "solid guild" by the joggers. it's a fun disc that's solid from beginning to end. their major influences are 90s indie bands like pavement, polvo, modest mouse, built to spill, the fall, etc., but they don't just regurgitate them.

Hey pyrokitten,

Being in the bay area you might already be familiar with them, but if not definitely check out Beulah. Their album "when your heartstrings break" is one of my all-time favorites. Brilliant, lush pop-y joy, with great instramental sections. "The coast is never clear" is also good, a little more mellow.

And lo, what's this?! A visit to the website indicates that they have a new album out... I've gotta check that out!

Also, I've been listening to Delerium's Karma lately, which is sort of in line with the world fusion dance genre you mentioned. And fun to spin fire to. :)

John Vanderslice- Time Travel... or Life and...
The Mountain Goats- Tallahassee
Death Cab for Cutie- The Photo Album
Mates of State- team boo and My solo project
Smog- Supper, Red Apple Falls, Knock Knock
all of these albums (and bands!) are terrific- you can't go wrong. I try to recomend Smog to everyone I know, but I guess it's not something with a wide range of appeal. (though I think it's super hot) Also, JV is about to put out a new album and tour, so watch out for that! www.johnvanderslice.com

In Seattle, all the cool kids listen to KEXP.
They do a Top 90.3 of the year list, which you might like.
Go to kexp.org, click on their "charts," then on "Top 90.3"
A very indie list with nice range, covering rock to the soft stuff, but all quality.
I trust their taste quite a bit.
Best of luck!

If you have iTunes you can listen to KEXP right through their radio player. It's great at-work stuff, especially for those of us on the East Coast. :)

Or you could just stream it off their web site if you don't have iTunes. But I thought it was kind of neat that it's built in.

I used to be the music director for my college radio station, so I still keep up with CMJ just to see what's hot on the college charts. You can check it out at

www.cmj.com

and select "Radio 200" from the CMJ Charts box. Sun Kil Moon is #1 right now, but I can't say that I've been able to get into that record. I gave it a good hard listen in a local record shop, but it just wasn't doing it for me. Anybody have this album? Am I missing something?
