Iranian hard/progressive rock, Arashk

Iranian hard/progressive rock, Arashk

Hi,

I am Salim, a composer in the Iranian hard/progressive rock band.

We have just released our first album Abrahadabra and I would be very thankful if you spend some time listening to it and share your opinions.

The interesting point here is that actually I have always had problems in defining this album's musical "style" for others... So maybe you could help!!

However that this "problem" may somehow be normal as my own musical taste is extremely versatile!

Cheers,
Salim

Does anyone know if "Across my Shoulder" was ever released on a single? I have it on a compilation - I don't think it's on the 2 albums I have.

Also, i wonder where they are today...

APPLESEED CAST
"Formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, Appleseed Cast released its first record, The End of The Ring Wars, a mere six months after forming. Looking for greener pastures, the band relocated to Lawrence, KS in 1998 and began endlessly touring in the United States and Europe for the next five years. Through the bands next five releases on Deep Elm, they underwent several line-up changes. After releasing the critically acclaimed Low Level Owl series, they began to capture the eyes and ears of new fans, especially Tiger Style Records. The quintet features Christopher Crisci (guitars, vocals), Aaron Pillar (guitar), Marc Young (bass), Josh Baruth (drums), and Jordan Geiger (keys). Citing influences as diverse as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Sex Pistols, Appleseed Cast is ready for you to sit up and take notice."
Better Propaganda
Www.appleseedcast.com

MINUS STORY
"One of Lawrence's most distinctive voices is Minus Story, a five-piece fronted by the rawboned voice and frame of Jordan Geiger (also the former keyboardist for The Appleseed Cast). "No Rest for Ghosts" is the band's fourth full-length and second for the Bloomington-based Jagjaguwar label (also home to current tour-mates Okkervil River). Like most Jagjaguwar artists, Minus Story plays an adventurous brand of music that both endears them to loyal fans and precludes a quick rise to notoriety. That's not to say the band is inaccessible - they just require a bit of investment.
The album's foundation is a bunch of perfectly hummable folk songs peppered with existentialist lyrics."

THE RUM DIARY
"The California quartet weld together a hearty helping of of double percussion with deep swathes of melodious bass guitar, atmospheric guitars and keyboards, and gentle male vocals to create impressionistic indie rock of epic proportions. Like the groups to which they are most often compared - Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Three Mile Pilot, Pinback, Tristeza, etc. - The Rum Diary excels at constructing mood music more than "proper" songs."

Hi there, folks !

I am working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands in India - through various channels like direct marketing & club representation, etc. I am mostly looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a well-knit network of music lovers, which I am in the process of developing. Basically I am open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds. We'll test market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. Anybody who has or knows someone with great music to share - and who wants to capture the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details. U can send me ur website, clips, bios etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in

P.S: There are also offers for a few live gigs at select 5star hotels in the holiday (if u happen to be visiting India) season.

Looking to make a big musical bang with all u mates at Tribe !

Cheers

THREE CHILDREN OF FORTUNE ADDED TO DOWNLOAD

THREE CHILDREN OF FORTUNE ADDED TO DOWNLOAD

THREE CHILDREN OF FORTUNE will be opening the Second Stage (Snickers) at Download (UK) on Saturday 11th June, on stage at 11am - so mind your ears and watch your hangovers! This is some kind of last minute edition to the bill for any of you suckers fool enough to pay the rip-off Download prices when you'd be far better off waiting for the BUKANDSKIT festival in Reading next week. You still have time to grab that debut Three Children single that we put out here on ORG, don't leave it too much longer, you can get it for £2.00 including P&P right now, pretty soon it's be £30.00 a go on E.bay......

Next on ORG we have LEISUR HIVE and THE GOD DAMN WHORES and SPIRRITWO -

Stimulator's delicious 1978 meets 2005 horny girl-fronted new wave synth pop hit the shops and streets last Monday - they're off on a US tour with Duran Duran.....
.
LEISUR::HIVE - "Sean, Just wanted to let you know that the single has now been mastered.. Doug's sending me the master in the post so I should have it in a day or two. Here's what we decided on for the track listing" Dan - thank you Dan.... here we go, this is one is extra exciting

TRACKS

1: On Sectional Pad
2: Interior; Hungry 2005 (a re-recording of an old song)
3: Applicant Seed (we always play this live and it was originally going to be on the album - but we've only recently finished recording it)
4: Neck Decision
5: On Sectional Pad - Legions Of Partisans Mix. (a deeply horrible
sounding remix by The Penalty For Harbouring Partisans. It's 37 minutes long!)

Although each individual component of the Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball would make for a fun evening out on the town, it's the grandness of this event that sets it apart from all others. The Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball is a Sound & Vision Musical that tells the tale of Nick Fudrich, a Detroit River dock worker during the prohibition era. As with the finest fashion collections, several common threads are used to tie together the individual components of this production: Music, fashion and staging inspired by the 1920's. Actors to give the event its grounding. And a bold narrator.

4 years in love, Scissors For Lefty has risen to be a source of underground & emotional fuel for California. They are a tightrope boxing act of modest intentions vs. naughty-naughty lifestyle, Scissors for Lefty... music, band, San Francisco, indie, pop.
www.scissorsforlefty.com

Hijack The Disco traverses the sonic spectrum. The dynamic, democratic and cohesive three-piece triggers mixed feelings of tragedy and hopefulness, desperation and strength. Formed in 2000 by Michael Mahony (bass & keyboard) and David Tsui (guitar) in Vermont, the band released two full-length home recordings and recorded/produced their self-titled EP on their own label, The Restless Press.
www.hijackthedisco.com

"Veiled beneath their catchy synth-punk slivers lies an illuminating tapestry of fiendish fun. Nothing is more bizarre than interweaving fraught yelping with a low-fidelity sound screen, while setting it to an abruptly deranged dance beat. This record provokes images of being wide-eyed and hopped up on crank, desperately clutching at your face, and furiously teetering on a highwire in stilettos, as you maniacally laugh through gritted teeth. 'Cause you know you've got to turn this kind of Bud-guzzling, silly-strutting, snarly, gnarly cock rock up. Retardo-cool.."
www.boyjazz.com

"Rare is the modern hard-rock album that hearkens back to classic sounds without blatantly ripping off classic tunes. Even the best outfits flying the stoner-rock flag seem content to bash out by-the-numbers riffs nicked from Sabbath or the Nuge. Local quartet Dirty Power makes no bones about its influences on its self-titled Dead Teenager Records debut, but the crafty, barbed-wire hooks and inventive guitar interplay showcase a knack for songwriting that's glaringly absent from most retro-rock regurgitation."
"Three-piece, Hijack the Disco reminds me somewhat of The Promise Ring, but a bit more complex. Their music fits into the math rock category. Sometimes quirky, sometimes more catchy or complex, they keep changing things up. The songwriting is at times intricate, but always likable."
"Songs conjure weird confluences: you might tease out strands of tropicalian Bossa Nova, Laurel Canyon folk, Vini Reilly riverbed, reverbed languor and even Broadcast's spooked tenderness. You could praise individual moments...but it's the overall weave, the daydreamy drift, that impresses."
Uncut Magazine
www.callandresponsemusic.com

"On the surface Chemical Friends seems to be a fairly
straightforward acoustic singer/songwriter affair however there's ever so subtle details that shift Lannon's music slightly off the beaten path. There's absolutely nothing heavy nor intrusive about the album. It's all the softest, prettiest wispy melodies and whispery singing. Very vaporous and atmospheric with hushed acoustic
guitar, layered vocals and an occasional gentle programmed pulsing beat. Lannon's vocal delivery seems warmly familiar recalling the heartfelt ache of the late Elliott Smith. Some customers even mistook this to be Elliott Smith's forthcoming posthumous album It all makes for an overall picture that suggests a spacey folk pop distant cousin of Simon And Garfunkel (or their present-day kindred
spirits Kings of Convenience for that matter), the abovementioned Smith and Pink Floyd. Very nice!"
Aquarius Records

"Drawing from the wooden modernity of Bossa Nova as a base, Davenport adds touches of British folk, psych, softrock and the occasional drum machine. All the while, his emphasis on the art of the pop song remains."

From the ashes of seminal San Franciso Mission band Fantasy, Little
Fuzzy formed in Fall 2001 and has been playing and recording steadily since then, leading to the April 2004 release of it's self-titled debut. The band plays everything from shiny pop gems to rock anthems, but all slightly askew and faintly echoing everything from Prince to T-Rex, from The Beatles to MC5, from the Beach Boys to DEVO, from Beck to the Kinks, and has performed at the Make-Out
Room, El Rio, The Hemlock tavern, The Bottom of the Hill, The Adobe Bookshop, The Hush-hush, Cafe Fais Do-Do in LA, and the Fillmore, where they opened for the Monkees...
www.littlefuzzymusic.com

"From Bubblegum to Sky's debut record, Me and Amy and the Two French Boys, was gloriously accepted as the shimmering and melodic pop illumination that it was. Combining loves for American pop with Japanese kitsch, Bowie and the Beatles with Pink Lady, From Bubblegum to Sky released an album full of "serene sonic textures"
and a "sparkling, distinctive pop aesthetic."
www.eeniemeenie.com/artists/fbts/bio.htm

Justin Frahm of This Union Standard writes songs about telephones and automobiles and cites his main influences as The Cure, Gordon Lighfoot, and AM 580 CKWW--Southwest Ontario's premiere oldies station.

San Francisco's own Film School, initially the solo project of Krayg Burton, now fleshed out with alumni of acts like Azusa Plane and Technicolor, crafts lush, opulent pop music soaked in bliss, kitted out with a sprinkle of Flying Saucer Attack, a touch of Nick Drake, and a twinge of the Byrds."
"Boyskout, a blend of thumping rhythms, dungeony arrangements, seductive vocal callings, and full-throttle attitude belted out amidst layers of surprising melodies, BoySkout's songs range from tight dark pop ditties - rock n roll goes dancing - to synth-driven ballads and eerily compelling tales of self-expression."

"Since 2001 San Francisco's Madelia have evolved from their dreamy origins into an amalgam of angular dance rhythms, shoegaze and post-whatever that Filter Magazine has deemed 'Dark Sonic Fuck Rock." Madelia's latest release, 'Everyday Underneath,' has garnered praise from the likes of Aquarius Records, AOL Online and Skratch Magazine, who enthused, "[Madelia's music]beautifully furls and unfurls, retaining and releasing
latent energy that comes out in a very steamy, ethereal fashion." Madelia's influences range from the creative dynamics of CA 90s hardcore bands Clikatat Ikatowi, Antioch Arrow, etc. to the textural songwriting of groups like My Bloody Valentine and the post-punk danceability of Wire & Gang of Four."

"Iceland's sprawling horizon has become an oddly ubiquitous touchstone for describing contemporary American music, with loads of new bands snatching their spectral bits from Sigur Rós' massive arsenal of otherworldliness. Tristeza's Jimmy LaValle, who has been
recording spare, instrumental hymnals as The Album Leaf since late 1998, is the closest North American equivalent to the pale Nordic maestro, and his pockets are well-stuffed with the papers to prove it: After touring extensively with Sigur Rós (who frequently joined LaValle onstage), LaValle was shuttled-via-invite to Mosfellsbaer, Iceland to record at Sundlaugin, Sigur Rós' home studio, borrowing their string section, Amina, and collaborating with vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson and members of (fellow Icelandic howlers) Múm."

"While grounded in earlier classic Floyd (what trippy noise-rock act isn't?), the Rum Diary leans towards the harsher, heavier sounds of Suntan, Mogwai and, at times, My Bloody Valentine. But don't let these feedback-coated touchstones fool you into believing RD is merely derivative. Something smart and a little sinister is going on here."

"The Roots of Orchis make instrumental headphone music for public transportation, because their introverted groove seems to slow everything else down. So when you just missed the bus or the trains are full and rush hour strangers are huddled against you claustrophobically, you can lose yourself in your head with their measured, somewhat dub-like beats, guitar, bass, samples, synthesizers, and occasional turntable scratching. The Roots of Orchis’ music is a really calm bath of subtlety, especially welcome during the throngs of a city’s chaos."

"Many consider the Pixies the Platonic ideal of a certain hardcore- pop style, of which copious transitory doppelgangers are merely cast shadows. But for every gross of mediocre Pixies imitators, there's a band that builds upon their legacy by appending their own specific
sensibility to it. It's prudent to note that these echoes are not usually the result of blatant imitation; rather, they're born from a genuine love and admiration for a work that inflamed the imaginations of so many people.

All art is some permutation of, or comment upon, the art its creator has internalized; what's crucial is that something is added to the mix. Without the Pixies' ascendancy, we wouldn't have the Nirvana we know. The same goes for Mclusky, who impressed their own distinct thumbprint and range of other influences on the Pixies' style. And
we probably wouldn't have Pidgeon's excellent marriage of boy/girl singing, shredded screaming, indie-pop, and blistering thrashcore-- the mansion they've built upon the foundation the Pixies laid by assimilating their own influences into a unique style."
"We might stretch comparisons to Elliott Smith or Simon and
Garfunkel when we hear such impeccable guitar work and such longing, tender lyrics. Pretty much as lush as the singer-songwriter thing gets. A rarity at the local level, even in a talent-rich city like San Francisco."
"Jason Lakis has the kind of hypnotic voice that Will Oldham never quite perfected. And the fact that he punctuates his gently floating countrified melodies with pedal steel guitar just makes the music he and his band members create ... all the more mystifying....
"A new Latin pop experience emerges when Ana Machado and José Márquez, better known in the indie music arena as Pepito, create their blend of smartly orchestrated compositions, electronic-aided rhythms, and intertwining vocals. Since 2001, the Bay Area duo has put out a couple of notable albums, including their politically engaging debut Migrante; their wide-ranging sound has drawn comparisons to bands like Tortoise and the Postal Service. Pepito won't have to travel too far tonight to give fans an earful of punky IDM goodness when they take to the stage at the Mission's 12 Galaxies."
"More Deep Cuts finds Dee Kesler's Thee More Shallows flexing their muscles far more than on their 2002 debut. A distillation of much of the last decade's best US indie, it draws upon the likes of The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy's Under The Western Freeway, melding these with more atmospheric meditative influences like Slint. Kesler's softly spoken vocals provide a focus around which his songs blossom in an often euphoric fashon, and the inspired use of strings and toy pianos to flesh out the sound is never overstretched. Deeply addictive."

The All-Music Guide gave their last CD “Vectors” a four-star rating, calling it, “trip-hop without the hop.”
"Loose, fuzzy indie-rock and nestled, contemplative sweeping pop. Built Like Alaska's debut, Hopalong is a mature, diverse record that proves a weepy acoustic number can, and does, go well next to a bouncy, guitar-soaked rocker. The two sides of the band tug and pull at your emotions as you find yourself crying with them one minute, as you both share a smile and a laugh the next. At times majestic and other times dirty, the serene rock of Built Like Alaska mirrors the cold, light climate of the land in which is takes its name from."

"Last of the Blacksmiths are a wildly talented San Francisco band that makes sparse, harmony-rich music that vibrates with organic warmth. The two main singers trade guitar, Fender Rhodes, and mandolin as the bassist plucks restrained notes and the drummer plays subtle brushes. Their music is slow and stark, evoking an American scene..."

And don't think they don't know it, either. On "You Drive And We'll Listen To Music," Adrienne Robillard seductively coos: "You drive…and we'll listen…to music…in the engine." Now if that's not a sentiment worthy of Kraftwerk in their prime, I don't know what is."

"Husband and wife team Kevin and Anita Robinson make bottom-heavy, dreamy tunes as Portland, Oregon duo Viva Voce, and they clearly enjoy themselves in the studio. On The Heat Can Melt Your Brain, the couple's third, they color their whispery melodies, club-ready grooves and understated social criticisms, with fuzzy distortions, washed-out backup vocals and a slew of other mixing board tricks. Along the way, the band sounds psychedelic and electronic (although they play instruments). There's an element of portent lurking within the songs, as the two sing in stark monotones that turn seemingly hopeful lines like "So happy today's the day, things will turn around," icy and ironic. And with songs (and song titles) like "Mixtape=Love," which casts inarticulate lovers failing to communicate, and "Free Nude Celebs," which is ultimately about hopelessness and loneliness, it seems that Viva Voce (Italian for "by word of mouth") achieve something greater than simple space jams: sharp, smart stoner rock."

"It takes an extraordinary songwriter to pen a number as beatifically positive as "Whistled a Slow Waltz," which extols the values of family ties and love without seeming cliché’d. And that’s where Silos frontman Walter Salas-Humara comes in. For 19 years, he’s led the band with his deft pen, having near-scrapes with fame but mostly recording album after album with songs full of heart and musicianship, then buzzing from town to town in a van to deliver them on stage with all he’s got. One could call him New York City’s answer to Austin’s Alejandro Escovedo. He’s explored everything from punk to experimental sonics to down-home country rock without reservation."
www.thesilos.net

"Rosie's voice is stunning-- a delicate timbre, a beautiful hushed passion, with the requisite lung-power when she needs to drive home a melody. If singing range were a climbing rope, Rosie would ring the bell, and ring it often. To hit the high notes, Thomas employs a gorgeous (and apparent) transition to falsetto. You can tell she likes that shift, and the falsetto itself, as a number of the tunes on her album make that vocal acrobatic a prominent part of the melody (e.g. "Lorraine"). Moreover, in concert, Thomas obviously had a keen sense of dynamics-- during the quieter moments it became clear that, except for Thomas, the venue was in utter silence, captivated."

"...what sets Desert City Soundtrack far above their peers is their willful disregard for anything resembling a traditional genre. It's a hodgepodge of styles, made more unique by the reliance on piano and the bits of trumpet that add to the guitar and drums. This is a band that can make music that is simultaneously lovely and frightening, intriguing and disturbing, yet always poignant and powerful. "

"This Northern California quartet likes to confound expectations. But despite the fancy rhythmic shifts and excursions into wind and space, this is at heart a group playing very strong, impressionist pop music with an emphasis on hypnotic guitar riffs and forlorn melodies pulled straight from the sadcore file."

FILM SCHOOL takes elements of shoegaze, psychedelia and indie rock to create their own sound. Winding melodies wrap their way around legions of layered chords. Sonic blasts of guitars simmer into thick waves. A wash of droning guitars merge into delicate melodies. This dynamic mix of atmospheric rock and understated pop swirls into a shimmering soundscape underscored by the plaintive vocals of Krayg Burton.

Hey, just wanted to let you all know, I'm the PD of a web radio station that went online this week called Internet Public Radio. There are some indie rock tracks including Beulah, Built to Spill, Cat Power, Clem Snide, Elliot Smith, Modest Mouse, Pavement, Pixies, Radiohead, Ranier Maria and Yo La Tengo.

We broadcast at 32kbs (with FM radio quality), and we're dial-up friendly. (In fact, I listen on dial-up with very little rebuffering.)

The station is online at http://live365.com/stations/ipr2004
Thanks.

"Oakland's sleek, co-ed threesome the Lovemakers join forces with San Francisco's ethereal five-piece Film School for an evening of synth-pop and indie rock. The Lovemakers, who recently signed to Interscope Records, unabashedly seduce, convulse, and make out on stage, pouring on the sex and suggestion with their come-ons and tightly structured pop music. But where their approach is coolly explicit, Film School's is modestly implicit — the group's haunting, subtle melodies reveal themselves far more slowly and self-consciously. Fall in love with them both in a single night."

The likes of Grand Funk, T-Rex, Sabbath, Kiss, Crue, are all no doubt influences, and we'd say that this oughta appeal to fans of The Darkness, Drunkhorse, and Andrew W.K.
"Condor has traded in the simple disco bell of its contemporaries and opted for the more plodding space attack that is currently unused by bands which play songs clocking in under three minutes. With our current crop of post-punk bands now competing basically on beats and hooks alone, innovation occurs elsewhere. While the recording falls short of inspiring a laser light show, Condor somehow blends the now acceptable sounds of post-punk with fresh direction. There are few bands around which sound like a mix of The Fall, The B-52s, Joy Division, and Hawkwind. And, hey, let's throw Der Plan in there for the nerds."
"Syncopated, driving guitar lines run up against lush but detached Radiohead-y sound-paintings of keyboard and drum. An elfin god-of-rock guitarist scythe-cuts high energy, crisp, interlocking, mathy sequences in and around them. David Bowie-meets-Thurston Moore vocals canter and caterwaul always on the verge of emotion, but stay just one step past cool, eschewing traditional verse-chorus-verse, in favor of arty experimentation and the feeling. Current darlings of the indie rock coolies."

"Since 2001 San Francisco's Madelia have evolved from their dreamy origins into an amalgam of angular dance rhythms, shoegaze and post-whatever that Filter Magazine has deemed 'Dark Sonic Fuck Rock." Madelia's latest release, 'Everyday Underneath,' has garnered praise from the likes of Aquarius Records, AOL Online and Skratch Magazine, who enthused, "[Madelia's music]beautifully furls and unfurls, retaining and releasing latent energy that comes out in a very steamy, ethereal fashion." Madelia's influences range from the
creative dynamics of CA 90s hardcore bands Clikatat Ikatowi, Antioch Arrow, etc. to the textural songwriting of groups like My Bloody Valentine and the post-punk danceability of Wire & Gang of Four."

[this band is doing some of The Cure dates]
While dominated by the massive guitar sounds of Christian Hejnal and Rickey Lime, Scarling's songs display a canny pop sensibility that bobs just beneath their aural surface, and former Jack Off Jill vocalist Jessicka's voice seems to have gained some welcome depth and texture in the context of her new band. Hejnal and Jessicka have cited Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine as key influences on Scarling's approach, and it shows —rather than going for standard-issue Marshall-stack crunch, Hejnal and Lime utilize feedback, drones, and floating masses of overtones to give these seven songs an attack that could be described as a loving pummel that embraces as it bruises.

so far, as far as indie rock, the best ones i have picked up are:

blonde redhead
matt pond PA
the killers

and that's it from the indie rock scene. the new beastie boys is gritty and the new piebald is hokey.

Notice how similar their vibes are?
Don't get me wrong, I love it.
It's sort of ... eighties, or something.

has anyone heard of this band and know where to find their album? someone played it at a campout this weekend and it was wonderful - pretty dreamy music with female french vocals. couldn't find them on google or amazon. guess i will need to overcome my aversion to telegraph ave in berkeley and make a trip to amoeba soon...

Saw Death Cab and Ben Kweller

So... Saw Aveo, Death Cab for Cutie and Ben Kweller at the 9:30 club in DC.

All I have to say is "Wow"... What a great show. My only question... Why is BK headlining on the east coast? Now.. I love Ben Kweller but Death Cab was awesome and definitely put on a better show than BK, IMHO.

Anyway, I highly suggest getting yourself to see these guys if they're coming to your neighborhood and you have the means. Great show... one of the better that I've seen in a long time (though, I'm terribly unobjective... I about died when I saw that BK was playing with Death Cab... 2 of my favorites).

And FYI... BK's new album, "On My Way" comes out 4/6. They played a couple of songs from it... pretty good stuff.

2 - the chills - brave words
3 - REM - murmur
4 - meat puppets - tie between meat puppets II and up on the sun

So....many many months ago I filled out one of those online forms for the CD antitrust litigation brought against "Record" companies for high cd prices, and lo and behold, today I got a check for 13.98 from it.I was pleasantly shocked and surprised, thinking I would never see anything, basically got a free cd for all the overpriced cds I ever paid for.Justice DOES work....hee hee.

Demo tools: Free Web Music Player to add to your own web page

I am just about finished on a new web site that should be of particular interest to musicians:

http://player.itvfan.com/intro
http://player.itvfan.com/

Examples:

http://members.cox.net/o12/
http://player.itvfan.com/test2/

I started this project to make it easy for a musician friend in San Diego to demonstrate his guitar chops online, in an effort to form a new rock band. By having an embedded web music player on his own web page with some samples of his guitar playing, he could narrow down the selection/auditions/phone calls required to form his new band.

I decided to make it even more useful to both musicians and others, by adding 14 internet radio stations and the ability to play music CDs from the computer CDROM drive.

It's free, so feel free to let others know.

I'm totally fucking stewing.. I rolled to The Royal in Federal Hill (Baltimore) tonight and some fucking brown stripey sweater emo fag fucking ripped on me like I was some wannabe or something. I'm so stewing about this fucking guy presuming.. just because I'm in jeans and a halfway decent button down shirt that I'm not into decent music.. He said something about us being in "the superbowl club". Yeah... I know the guitarist in the last band that played and happened to buy a CD from the first band that played but I guess he didn't know that.. What says that what you wear out makes who you are? fucker... How dare he. I'm so pissed off.. I just wanted to lay into him... Presume that I'm some preppy fuck just because of what I'm wearing and how my hair's cut.. I got the last laugh though, his girlfriend or whatever was totally throwing looks at me. Asshole. I hope you read this, you brown stripey sweatered fuck. I owe you one and I will be totally repaying my debt if I ever see you again. No... Neb automatically doesn't listen to quality music just because He has some nice jeans on and a nice shirt and wears a long (but very corporate) haircut. Any of you guys listen to decent music (obviously or you wouldn't be here) and look like a straight-laced kinda guy ever have to deal with this kind of shit? People just presuming based on how you might look when you go out... Just because you don't have on brown corduroys and a fucking brown stripey sweater that you aren't hardcore?

I have to give the guy props, though... He had the cajones to fuck w/ me and my buddy even though each of us is about 2 of him... There are benefits to being 6'3" and 245 lbs... Not a lot of people fuck with you. Then there's this guy... just because he's wearing a nice brown stripey sweater and I'm not, I must not be hardcore.

Don't know if anyone is into this band, but you can get their new album months before it is released to stores. Go to:

http://www.thesecretmachines.com

and you can buy & download the album there or buy it from iTunes. Either way you get 5 bonus songs with a rare track by the Machines as well as songs by The Walkmen, Von Bondies, and more. They also give you a blank CD-R with artwork from the band. What a deal for under $10!

Picked up the new No Motiv CD the other day... Daylight Breaking is pretty damn good... Sounds very radio friendly which can be a bad thing at times but overall, I really dig it. Definitely sounds like a Vagrant Records band (not necessarily a bad thing).

i used to be a dj at kalx in berkeley but since i stopped doing that, i'm really out of it when it comes to new music. i'd like to get some new stuff, and i could use some suggestions. some of my favorite bands are the magnetic fields, the chills, the bats (pretty much every kiwi pop band on flying nun), small factory, elliott smith, barbara manning, uncle tupelo, the descendents, neutral milk hotel, the flatmates, the shop assistants, most bands on sarah records, slumberland or parasol... okay i could go on and on... but most of the albums i own came out in the '90s or earlier... :) help please! oh, specific album recommendations would be especially useful. i also like world fusion dance stuff like the buddha bar compilations, lost at last, transglobal underground, & talvin singh. thanks for any ideas you might have!

Has anyone heard the new John Vanderslice album, Cellar Door? (Out today, I hear.)
Does it live up to the hype?
I've heard two tracks off the Barsuk web site (barsuk.com), and it's not grabbing me quite like his previous work. But knowing me, I'll probably go buy it today anyway ...
Anyone heard it yet? Opnions?

Has anybody picked up Owsley's new release, The Hard Way? It's really starting to grow on me. I'm not sure if I like it as much as his debut album from a few years back, but nevertheless it's great to hear him performing new songs again. I hope he passes through the DC area again sometime soon.

Club Lovely TONIGHT!

from jon-

Alrighty kids, tonight (Friday the 2nd) my good
buddy Colin (along with his lovely girlfriend,
Jessica) and myself are gonna be spinning records
at the Edinburgh Castle from about 10-2.
Basically it'll be Club Lovely, but for one night
only. In you you're not familiar with Club
Lovely (or just don't remember), it's an indiepop
dance club that graced the upstairs of the
Edinburgh Castle for quite some time before Colin
and Jessica decided it was time to further their
education and move to Canada (now Buffalo, NY).
Well, he and Jessica are back so we want all our
old friends (and those friends we haven't made
yet!) to come out and dance and have a good
time. Indiepop/Rock, BritPop, Punk, New Wave,
Mod Classics, all the fun stuff you know and
love. So come out and have a good time with us.
It'll probably be a while before we see Jessica
and Colin again. Hope to see you there!

I recently found a copy of Clag's "Manufacturing Resent" 7" EP (a classic of Australian twee indie-pop from 1993). Since it's long out of print and the label that put it out hasn't existed for ages, I've put MP3s of it online. (I asked a former member of the band and she said she was cool with that.)

Owning a music club

Many cities across the world have clubs where live music is played (Detroit is no exception), but so many owners are in the business only for the business. I don’t blame anyone from wanting to eat but owners that take a real interest in catering to both of the clients (the paying ones and the bands) are rare. Does anyone have experience owning or working in a club? There’s a few of us here thing of opening one in Detroit and we’re interested in your feedback (good and bad).

http://www.theblots.com/audio.htm -probably be a pain over dialup.
